What does «estereotipo» mean in Spanish?
- Printing plate or stencil.
- Image or idea adopted by a group, a highly simplified conception of something or someone. A stereotype is a cultural bias created by attributing real or perceived qualities or behaviors to a set, or by assuming them to be true for every individual within that group. It may be directed at an ethnic, racial or national group, or based on gender, sexual orientation or appearance. The term was coined by journalist Walter Lippman in the 1920s. Stereotypes about ethnic minority groups, women, members of religious minorities, youth, the elderly, people with disabilities, handicaps or exceptional characteristics are still common in everyday life, but in the decades since Lippman coined the term, human rights advocates in many different fields have become increasingly adept at confronting, challenging and countering stereotypes.
