- An ungulate soliped belonging to the equidae family, of the order Perissodactyla. Although the term horse is applied in the broadest sense to any member of the family, i.e., horses, donkeys or zebras, it commonly refers to the domestic horse (Equus caballus). This differs from its immediate congeners in having a wavy mane, a tail covered with long hairs, a certain horny excrescence known as a "chestnut" on the inside of the hind leg, relatively short ears, a slender head, long legs and broad hooves.
