What does «filis» mean in Spanish?
- Grace and delicacy in doing or saying things. It was widely used in the lyric poetry of the Golden Age, especially as a woman's name. It was also used in the past in a colloquial way to refer to a woman who is loved.
Examples of use in Spanish: "se derrite por aquella filis de sus ojos".
"su filis es la vecina".
"¡a mi Filis!, ¡mi querida, mi inocente".
- A very small clay toy that women used to wear tied to their arm with a ribbon.
- A genus of plants of the Rubiaceae family.
- (Filis o Phyllis) Female character of Greek mythology, daughter of Lycurgus (king of Thrace). She married Demophon (son of Theseus) after the Trojan War. Demophon returned home to help his father by abandoning Philis, she then sends him a coffin consecrated to Rhea, asking him to open it when he lost hope of returning. Philis then commits suicide by hanging herself on a tree and in the area where she is buried grows an almond tree that will blossom upon Demophonte's return. Another version of the legend says that Demophon opens the coffin and is horrified by what he saw, mounts his horse and dies dismounted falling on his sword.
- (Filis) A frequent character in pastoral poetry. She is a simple shepherdess, charming and in love. The Spanish poet Lope de Vega wrote a cycle about her.
