What does «eutropelia» mean in Spanish?
- Virtue of moderation in amusements or recreations.
- In Philosophy, it refers to pleasant conversation, with friendliness and a good sense of humor. It is one of Aristotle's virtues, being the "golden mean" between coarseness (ἀγροικία) and buffoonery (βωμολοχία). For a time, eutropelia came to mean obscene and coarse jokes. The word appears only once in the New Testament, in Ephesians 5:4, where it is translated "practical joke" in the NIV. The influential medieval philosopher Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) saw eutropelia in a positive light, again favoring the ancient Aristotelian notion that it consists of mental relaxation and honorable amusement.
