What does «desecamiento» mean in Spanish?
- Action and effect of drying or drying out. Elimination of the moisture contained in something.
- In chemistry, the removal of water contained in certain substances by raising their vapor tension to a point above that in the environment, which may be achieved either by heating the substance to increase the vapor tension of the retained water or by decreasing the total pressure that gravitates on the substance. Since the total pressure is equal to the sum of the partial pressures of the components, a hygroscopic material, such as sulfuric acid or calcium chloride, which absorbs moisture from the environment, will reduce the total pressure gravitating on the substance. The water present in the substance, having a higher vapor pressure than that of the medium, will tend to escape and will be absorbed by the hygroscopic material. The process will continue until this material is so diluted that it has lost its absorption capacity. Drying (or desiccation) can also be accomplished by lowering the pressure with the aid of a vacuum pump or by blowing dry air over the wet substance.
- (retracción por desecamiento) In architecture, reduction of the volume of the concrete due to loss of the moisture it contained.
- (desecamiento de la raíz) Disease that attacks wood that is exposed to environmental conditions. It is also called dry rot. It is due to the action of several species of fungi that digest parts of the wood that give it strength and stiffness. It was formerly used to describe any decay of seasoned wood in ships and buildings by a fungus that resulted in a decayed, cracked, dark-colored state. In other fields, the term has been applied to the decay of crop plants by fungi. In health and safety, the term is used to describe the deterioration of rubber, for example, the cracking of rubber hoses.
- (desecamiento del suelo) The process of forming polygonal cracks in compacted soil as water and moisture are lost during periods of drought.
