What does «corte y confección» mean in Spanish?
- It is the art of designing, cutting and sewing fabrics, in many cases for commercial purposes. This term is applied mainly to the manufacture of day and evening dresses, blouses, suits of fine fabrics, skirts and, in general, all kinds of women's outfits. This task specifically corresponds to dressmakers, although tailors may also be involved in the manufacture of ladies' suits and coats, especially if they are made of coarse woven fabrics. Both the industries that engage in this kind of activity and the people who make the garments at home follow laborious canons, to the point that we can refer to their occupation as a true art. It can be said that tailoring as an art began in Greek times, when it was closely linked to beauty, purity of line and simplicity. Medieval garments were excessively ornate. The "Victorian era" was distinguished by the use of luxurious fabrics of brilliant design, brocade, silver tissue, gold and furs, all within an elegant tone. The second Empire, from 1852 to 1870, brought the peek-a-boo and long johns, and in 1880 leg sleeves were in vogue.
