What does «Teología de la liberación» mean in Spanish?
- Liberation theology is a movement, which began in Catholic theology, that seeks the liberation of the poor and oppressed. The roots of liberation theology are found in the experience of those in Latin America. In 1968, the bishops of the Second Latin American Episcopal Conference in Medellin, Colombia, issued a statement that: "in many places in Latin America there exists a situation of injustice that must be recognized as institutionalized violence, because the existing structures violate the basic rights of people: A situation that demands far-reaching, bold, urgent and profoundly innovative changes" In general, liberation theology sought to view the Bible and Christianity through the lens of poverty, and to take the insights derived from that perspective to help bring about socio-economic reform, seeking to change the structures and institutions of society that perpetuated inequality.
