What does «nomenclador geográfico» mean in Spanish?
- A gazetteer or gazetteer used in conjunction with a map or atlas that usually contains information on the geographic composition, social statistics, and physical characteristics of a country, region, or continent. The contents of a gazetteer may include the location of the area, dimensions of peaks and watercourses, population, gross domestic product, and literacy rate. This information is usually divided into topics with entries listed in alphabetical order. Ancient Greek gazetteers are known to have existed since the Hellenistic era. The earliest known Chinese gazetteer was published in the 1st century, and with the era of print media in China in the 9th century, the Chinese nobility invested in producing gazetteers for their local areas as a source of information and local pride. The geographer Stephanus of Byzantium wrote a gazetteer (now with missing parts) in the 6th century that influenced later European compilers. Modern gazetteers can be found in the reference sections of most libraries as well as on the Internet.
