What does «incienso» mean in Spanish?
- Gomorresin that flows from certain trees and shrubs, and has been burned as a perfume in religious ceremonies since ancient times, also for therapeutic or aesthetic purposes. Essential oils of animal or vegetable origin are usually added to it, thus giving off a fragrant smoke when burning. The true incense is presented in the form of a tear of a color that can sometimes be whitish yellow and sometimes reddish and lustrous in appearance. The purest one is called male incense, as it is the one produced by the tree in a more natural way. The other is called female incense because it is not only of lower quality but also because it is extracted by making incisions in the trunk and then picking it up from the ground. Incense creates a particular aroma when burned and can be toxic when inhaled or ingested in liquid form. Solid incense is not considered toxic. Some recent studies have linked certain cancers to the excessive use of incense, although other studies have found no such link.
- Exaggerated praise or flattery, usually with some particular interest.
Examples of use in Spanish: "Estuvo dándole incienso toda la reunión, algo se trae entre manos".
- Liquid incense. Intoxicating liquid commonly called popper.
