- (Convivio) A work of literature by Dante, written between 1304 and 1307 in Florentine (volgare) during his exile from Florence. It offers a "banquet" of wisdom to those who did not know Latin at a time (13th century) when it was the language used to transmit scientific and political knowledge, philosophy and poetry. The Convivio is a sort of vernacular encyclopedia of the knowledge of the author's time. There Dante tries to refute the accusations that led him to exile and shows his doctrine. It deals with many areas of learning, not only philosophy but also politics, linguistics, science and history.
