What does «Beowulf» mean in Spanish?
- The oldest of the English epic poems. It is included in a manuscript dated about 1000 A.D., but appears to have been composed earlier, shortly after the sixth century. The manuscript, which is kept in the British Museum, is written in West Saxon dialect, although most scholars maintain that it is a transcription of northern or central dialect. Beowulf, nephew of the king of the Geats, aware of the outrages committed by Grendel, a monster in human form, at the court of Hrothgar, king of the Danes, sets sail for the court of this monarch with 14 men. He surprises the monster at night and defeats him after a fierce fight in which he tears off an arm. Grendel crawls back to his den in the depths of a distant lake. The next night, the monster's mother visits the royal court and captures a nobleman. Beowulf follows her and, plunging into the lake, has a terrible fight with the monster-woman, whom he kills and returns triumphant with Grendel's head.
