What does «anillos anuales o de crecimiento» mean in Spanish?
- Concentric layers of periodically formed woody cells that record the development of a tree in a growing season. In temperate regions growth is most rapid in spring, when cells with large cavities form. As growth continues in early summer, cells with smaller and smaller cavities are formed. After a few weeks, growth ceases completely until the following spring. The contrast between the cells formed at the beginning of this time and the highly compact tissue that preceded the winter dormancy makes the determined ring visible in the cut of a trunk or stem. The width of each ring reflects the climatic conditions of the season in which it was formed. A wide ring indicates an optimal year, with abundant rain and sunshine, while a narrower one corresponds to a year when growth factors were not as favorable.
