What does «estameña» mean in Spanish?
- Wool fabric with warp and worsted weft, which makes it rustic. It is generally black or brownish in color, for making coats, cloaks and, especially, religious habits. It is also known as etamine, wool or worsted fabric.
Examples of use in Spanish: "aún tejen estameña con lana que procede de las ovejas de la zona".
"vestía una típica chaqueta de estameña, muy usual de campesinos".
- In gastronomy, a cloth or fiber filter used in cooking that works by decanting. The filter is made from a cheesecloth and allows straining sauces, broths, custards, making tofu and ghee, thickening yogurt, sieving flour or jellies (quinces). It is also used in cheese making, where it is used to remove whey from the cheese curd and to help hold the curd together as it forms. Stamens are available in at least seven different grades, from open weave to extra fine. Grades are distinguished by the number of threads per inch in each direction.
