What does «enjuta» mean in Spanish?
- Evolut. A phenotypic characteristic that is a by-product of the evolution of some other characteristic, rather than a direct product of adaptive selection. The term was introduced by Stephen Jay Gould (paleontologist) and Richard Lewontin (population geneticist) in 1979, inspired by the spandrels of St. Mark's Basilica in Venice. According to Gould and Lewotin, one might think that the painted spandrels of that basilica were ornamental elements that had been created for that purpose, when in fact they are the necessary consequence of supporting a dome on a square structure with arches.
