- (Buri) In Norse mythology, Buri (Old Norse for "producer, father") is an early ancestor of the Æsir. He is the grandfather and father of the trinity of gods Odin, Vili and Ve. Buri was licked by the primal cow Auðumbla over the course of three days, freeing himself from the salty lime stones. Buri's background beyond this point has not been proven, and he had a son, Borr, through an unknown process. Buri is attested in the Prose Edda, composed in the 13th century by the Icelandic Snorri Sturluson. The Prose Edda includes a quotation from a 12th-century poem by Skald Þórvaldr blönduskáld that mentions the figure. Buri's mysterious origins are the subject of scholarly commentary and interpretation.
