What does «budismo» mean in Spanish?
- Philosophical and religious doctrine of Buddha. Set of doctrines formulated and promulgated by Gautama Buddha. Originally it was a way of life by which one can free oneself from ignorance, the cause of suffering, and attain peace and happiness of mind. Its goal is the attainment of Nirvana, a condition or state of mind of complete peace (v. Nirvana). Gautama Buddha proposed no dogma and eschewed all speculation on the origin of the world in order to devote himself to the solution of urgent and pressing human problems and the miseries of daily life. See Buddha. Among the outstanding teachings of Buddhism are: the doctrine of instability (all things are in constant mutation and, therefore, one should not become attached to things that change); the doctrine of the universality of suffering (all beings are subject to suffering); the doctrine of Karma (nothing exists without cause); the doctrine of the negation of self (there is no independent, categorical and permanent entity in itself); the doctrine of the unity of life (all beings have Buddha-nature, every individual is a Buddha in potency; the equality and brotherhood of man must therefore be predicated). What is important in Buddhism is the fulfillment of the doctrines rather than mere belief in them and identification with the truth, which is enlightenment.
