What does «braquicéfalo» mean in Spanish?
- Describes males with an almost round skull. The brachycephalic skull has a cephalic index greater than 80%. The cephalic index is given by the ratio of the maximum width of the skull to its maximum length, multiplied by 100 for numerical convenience. Brachycephalic skull is usually due to premature closure of the coronal sutures of the cranial vault, a congenital condition in which the skull is flattened from front to back, so that the head is short and wide.
- (razas braquicéfalas) Dog breeds with very short faces, e.g. Boxer, Bulldog, King Charles spaniel, Pekingese, Pug. Associated with this type of skull, these breeds suffer from upper respiratory tract abnormalities such as stenotic nares, elongated soft palate and disrupted laryngeal saccules, as well as associated disorders, e.g. facial fold dermatitis. They are also predisposed to chemoreceptor tissue neoplasms.
- (síndrome obstructivo braquicéfalo) Any of several upper airway disorders prevalent in brachycephalic dogs can lead to elongation and thickening of the soft palate, chronic pharyngitis and tonsillitis, inflammation and decreased diameter of the larynx and trachea. Predisposing conditions are eversion of the laryngeal saccules, laryngeal collapse and stenotic nostrils.
