What does «alóctono» mean in Spanish?
- Not a native of the region or country in which he/she lives; stranger.
- The rock whose components have been formed in a place other than that in which it is presently found, due to its having been transported by some geological agent.
- In geology, it is said of the soil or rock whose materials come from other deposits.
Examples of use in Spanish: "rocas alóctonas".
"Los Alpes y el Himalaya presentan numerosos bloques alóctonos y alrededor del Océano Pacífico se ha reconocido varias zonas alóctonas".
- In biology, said of an animal or plant species that is not native to the place or area where it lives: found in a place other than its place of origin. It is common for allochthonous species to compete strongly with, and even kill, native species.
Examples of use in Spanish: "especie alóctona".
- In ecology and biology, said of those nutrients or materials that have been incorporated into an ecosystem from outside it.
- (fósil alóctono) That fossil found in a place other than where it originated.
- (lengua alóctona) A language originating in a territory other than where it is spoken. An allochthonous language developed historically in one area, but was taken to another territory. In this sense it is opposed to the concept of autochthonous or indigenous.
- (río alóctono) A river that flows through areas drier than its source. An important example is the Nile River. It begins in the African intertropical area with a rainy tropical climate at Lake Victoria and flows through large desert areas until it empties into the Mediterranean Sea.
