What does «adsorbente» mean in Spanish?
- Adsorbing.
- Body or substance with which adsorption takes place. For example, powdered charcoal and tripoli are used as adsorbents. An adsorbent body has nanopores, known as active centers, in which the binding forces between the atoms are not saturated. These active centers allow molecules of a different nature from their own, coming from a gas in contact with their surface, to settle on them. Adsorption is an exothermic process and therefore occurs spontaneously if the adsorbent is not saturated. The most important application of adsorption thermodynamics is to calculate the phase equilibria between an adsorbent solid and a gaseous mixture.
- Adsorbent agent. Substance or material that is capable of adsorption. The substance that is adsorbed is called adsorbate.
- Intestinal or gastrointestinal adsorbent. These are administered orally and are used as antidotes for some cases of poisoning and as antidiarrheals. For example, kaolin, pectin.
