What does «valido» mean in Spanish?
- of value.
- Person who, in modern Spain, influenced the mind of the king, practically taking over the direction of the government. He has also been called a privy. Even with the clear precedent of Alvaro de Luna (15th century), it is from the successors of Philip II (17th century) that this person acquired importance, probably for two reasons: a greater complexity of government affairs and the weakness or incapacity of the monarch. If the position was generally occupied by nobles (Lerma, Olivares), with Charles II came upstarts, such as Nithard and Valenzuela, who based the valence on their capacity for intrigue and confidence. The arrival to power of the Bourbons and the consequent reform of the public administration extraordinarily limited the functions of the validos (Alberoni), with the sole and peculiar exception of Godoy.
- Valid (with tilde).
