What does «valente» mean in Spanish?
- A prefix used in chemistry that, after a numerical value, indicates the valency of an element or radical: monovalent, bivalent, trivalent. The valency is the saturation capacity of radicals, which is determined by the number of hydrogen atoms with which they can combine directly or indirectly.
- (covalente) Covalent, a type of bond in which the atoms are bonded by common pairs of electrons (the atoms share a valence). Example: if an atom has a valence of +1, it means that it has lost an electron, and another atom, with a valence of -1, means that they have one more electron. Thus, a bond formed between two atoms occurs because they complement each other or share their valence balance tendencies.
Examples of use in Spanish: "enlace covalente".
"compuesto covalente".
