What does «transliteración» mean in Spanish?
- Action and effect of transliterating: representation of sounds or characters of one language with signs of the alphabet of another. Strictly speaking, transliterations are used to reflect the exact way in which a given word is represented in the original language. For example, for the Greek language, the Greek alphabet is used, which has 24 letters, overlapping some letters, but also differs from the 27-letter version of the Latin alphabet used to write English. So in the etymologies in the Spanish dictionaries (like ours) the Greek words are used transliterated with Spanish letters.
