What does «sascab» mean in Spanish?
- Yellowish white and limestone earth used in construction, highly valued by the Mayans to make roads and houses. Sascab deposits or calcareous sands are very common throughout the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico). They are a transition between the evolution of hard rock to softening and then transforming into the calcareous head. The thickness of the sascab layer can vary from a few centimeters to several meters. The consistency of the sascab suggests that the crystallization of aragonite to calcite (a fundamental process for the consolidation of a rock) did not occur.
♦ Used in: Mexico
