What does «jututo» mean in Spanish?
- Conch, marine mollusk also known as lambí (Strombus gigas), although it is also a common name for other species. Used by the Carib Indians as a bugle; it is also consumed and aphrodisiac properties are attributed to it.
♦ Used in: Dominican Republic - Musical instrument elaborated by the aborigines who use the conch shell as a horn or cornet, removing part of the central convolutions of these. It was used for war, warnings, games, among other uses. In some places the jututo is used as a means of communication to transmit messages in code. For example, in the interior of the Dominican Republic, some butchers use the jututo to warn their customers that fresh meat has arrived, having different sounds depending on the type of meat.
