What does «dientes supernumerarios» mean in Spanish?
- Also called hyperdontia, extra teeth in addition to the usual 32 permanent teeth. They appear in approximately 2.5% of the population. Their cause is unknown but there is a certain familial predisposition. In more than 90% of cases these teeth appear in the upper jaw, something that is not completely understood. An extra tooth can cause crowding in the normal dentition if it erupts. Most of them do not erupt, only 25% erupt totally or partially.
