- Common name for a coleopterous insect of tropical and subtropical America, which emits two generally greenish lights at night from its head, and a third luminous zone on its belly visible in flight. Its scientific name is Pyrophorus. Other common names are tucutucu, tucu-tucus, cucuyos, cocuys, cucubanos, alúa, saltapericos, cucayos, taca-taca, achon, carbunco or tagüinches. They are generally referred to as fireflies or light bugs; however, they should not be confused with true fireflies. Although they are bioluminescent, they are not related to fireflies. Their eggs and larvae are also luminous.
