- Another name for the capybara, an amphibious rodent that lives in South America, on the banks of rivers and lagoons; its meat is not highly valued. The largest of the living rodents. It is easily domesticated. Close to the guinea pig, the capybara (Hydrochoerus) is a strongly built animal that measures about 1.30 m in length, whose height at the withers is about 53 cm and weighs 65 kg. Its body is covered with a thick, bristly, reddish-brown hair. Because of its general appearance, it has earned the common name of water hog.
