What does «bienes alodiales» mean in Spanish?
- In medieval times, the allodial goods were the goods owned in full dominion, without charges, censuses or separation of direct and useful dominion. In other words, they were the goods free of all encumbrances or manorial benefits, as opposed to the goods under feud or fiefs. The term appears as opposed to fief, which implies separation of the direct and useful domains, impossibility of transmitting the domain without the lord's authorization and personal relations between the lord and the possessor of the land. In very similar morphology it is used in France -alleu-, England -allodium- and Italy -alodio-, although its etymological origin (old German al-od, entire property) is quite disputed.
