What does «Amonitas» mean in Spanish?
- Semitic people who occupied the eastern region of the lower Jordan, north of Moab. Together with the Moabites, they opposed the entry of the Jews into Canaan. Although there was a notorious kinship between Ammon and Israel (Gen. 19:38), there was frequent strife between the two peoples. During the biblical period of the Judges the Ammonites made repeated raids on Israel until they were defeated by Jephthah. Reduced to servitude by David, they were henceforth reduced to the status of a vassal people.
