What does «agutí» mean in Spanish?
- Large South American rodent, similar to the hare, Dasyprocta agouti, similar to the guinea pig. It can reach 50 cm in length; the color of its rough fur varies between brown and yellow; its shape is massive; its legs are thin and porcine, with three toes on the hind legs; small and rounded ears and a rudimentary tail. The agouti is found from southern Mexico to Paraguay and in the West Indies; it usually builds its burrow at the foot of trees. It is active and graceful. When searching for food, it frequently causes serious damage to sugar cane plantations and similar crops. It is a nocturnal animal. It seems that the young are easily tamed.
