What does «violencia política» mean in Spanish?
- Violent physical or mental means employed by people and governments to achieve political objectives. Some kinds of political violence are: genocide, police brutality, paramilitary brutality, deliberate starvation, guerrilla warfare and insurgency, counterinsurgency, terrorism, torture or kidnapping, the death penalty, forced migrations, brainwashing, press censorship, etc. All are considered violations of human rights. Political violence exercised from the power of a government is contrary to the idea of democracy, which relies on dialogue and free elections to settle conflicts.
