What does «tlachiquero» mean in Spanish?
- Person in charge of exploiting magueys, i.e., extracting mead from the agave or maguey. Also called magueyero. The tlachiquero (tlachiquero) layers the maguey in its productive stage, removing the heart, which prevents the development of the stem (quiote) that produces a fruit (gualumbo) at its tip; if the plant is not removed, it does not produce aguamiel. Three to six months later, the maguey is scraped to obtain the mead, absorbing it with its mouth and depositing it in a demijohn.
♦ Used in: Mexico
Examples of use in Spanish: "los tlachiqueros no solían tener salario fijo".
"el tlachiquero se encarga de entregar el aguamiel al mayordomo o tinacalero".
"cada día el tlachiquero raspa el maguey dos veces, una por la mañana y otra por la tarde".
"el tlachiquero extraía el aguamiel de los magueyes".
