What does «síndrome» mean in Spanish?
- A set of symptoms characteristic of a disease. A syndrome is a set of observable phenomena that, taken together, identify a particular problem. In medicine, these observations include symptoms reported by a patient or otherwise obtained from a medical history, signs on examination, and the result of laboratory tests (e.g., clinical chemistry, hematology, microbiology) and imaging tests. Often, syndromic diagnosis proceeds step by step, as an observation suggests the need for further investigation. The word comes from the Greek for "running together," as the phenomena are considered to be related. A syndrome is a collection of manifestations and, at least in the preliminary stages of diagnosis, there may be different etiologies for the presentation. Apart from suppressing unpleasant manifestations, a firm etiology must be determined before proceeding to rational medical treatment.
Examples of use in Spanish: "síndrome biológico"; "síndrome clínico".
