- Spasmodic contraction of the muscles of the face that gives the face the appearance of laughter, pain, bitterness, etc. This contraction of the lips reveals the teeth as a forced laughter; it is a manifestation of pain and is also seen in certain nervous spasms.
- A strong gesture on the human face denoting some feeling, usually unpleasant or sorrowful.
