What does «hemostato» mean in Spanish?
- Some agent, such as a chemical, that stops bleeding; hemostatic.
- In medicine, a device to stop or prevent bleeding from compression of a blood vessel during surgery. A hemostat (also called a hemostatic clamp, arterial clamp) is a surgical tool used in many surgical procedures to control bleeding. For this reason, it is common in the initial stages of surgery for the initial incision to be lined with hemostats that close off blood vessels awaiting ligation. Hemostats belong to a group of pivoting instruments (similar to scissors, and includes needle holders, tissue holders and various forceps) where the structure of the tip determines the function. The hemostat has handles that can be held in place by its locking mechanism. The locking mechanism is usually a series of interlocking teeth, a few on each handle, which allow the user to adjust the clamping force of the forceps. When locked together, the force between the prongs is approximately 40 N (9 lbf).
