What does «hematozoario» mean in Spanish?
- Parasitic blood protozoan, agent of malaria. Laveran hematozoan is the protozoan that causes malaria (Plasmodium Malariae) in humans and dogs.
- Said of microscopic animals that live as parasites in the blood of others. Among these are some nematodes and protozoa. They affect red blood cells, destroying them, causing severe anemia. They are transmitted by vectors, e.g. ticks. Sometimes hematozoa can lodge in the brain and its meninges, causing convulsions, loss of balance, syncope, nosebleeds, etc. Some hematozoa that affect dogs are: ehrlichia canis, haemobartonella canis, anaplasma canis, anaplasma marginale, etc.; also the hematozoa affecting cattle that cause bovine tristeza or bovine piroplasmosis are anaplasma marginal, anaplasma bovis, anaplasma centrale, babesia bovis, etc.
