What does «escolasticismo» mean in Spanish?
- Philosophy of the Middle Ages, Christian, Arabic and Judaic, linked to theology and based on the books of Aristotle. It is characterized by the close link it establishes between theology and philosophy. Its main exponent is St. Thomas Aquinas. This theological movement attempted to use classical Greco-Latin philosophy (and even Arab and Judaic philosophical currents) to understand the religious revelation of Christianity. This caused in scholasticism a fundamental concern to consolidate and create great systems without internal contradiction that assimilated all the ancient philosophical tradition.
- Exclusivist school spirit in philosophy, science, teaching methods, etc.
- Related to the scholastic: rigid, conservative or formalist.
Examples of use in Spanish: "El escolasticismo de sus teorías no despierta simpatías".
