What does «elisión» mean in Spanish?
- The action and effect of eliding; the deletion of a vowel at the end of a word when the following one begins with another. For example, the contraction "al" which replaces "a el" after the elision of the letter "e". Another example is "de + el" which is replaced by "del".
- Sometimes it is used in the sense of ellipsis, which is the deletion, generally because it is understood, of a word or element of the sentence without losing its grammatical correctness. For example, in the sentence "I live in the city and she lives in the country", there is an elision of the verb "lives" because it is understood.
