What does «columna termométrica» mean in Spanish?
- Arrangement that has the liquid enclosed in the glass tube of the thermometer to mark the degrees of temperature. Bulb thermometers work by means of the dilatation of a liquid column which is usually made of alcohol or mercury (because of their dangerousness, the latter are almost not manufactured anymore). When the bulb of the thermometer comes into contact with a body, this liquid expands so that a position of the thermometric column is defined to establish the temperature of the body. The column "runs" on a scale, constructed in advance. When the column is fixed, after a few seconds, it then determines a number on the scale. That number is the body temperature.
