What does «circunlocución» mean in Spanish?
- A figure of speech or manner of speaking in which the meaning of a word is expressed in an imprecise and indirect way, by means of a roundabout way of saying words that could have been said with less. Also called periphrasis or circumlocution. Basically, it is the use of more words than necessary to express an idea or concept. In rhetoric it is used to avoid an expression that is too common or stereotyped. For example, say "the city that never sleeps" instead of "New York"; "the king of the jungle" instead of "lion".
