- Accumulation of a toxic substance in the muscle and internal organs of certain tropical and subtropical fish. When man eats this contaminated fish, he is said to be intoxicated by ciguatera or ciguatera. The toxin is generated by dinoflagellates (unicellular microorganisms that form phytoplankton) associated with coral reefs. The risk zone is from 35° north to 35° south, especially in the islands of the South Pacific, West Indies and Caribbean Sea. The fish species most likely to be contaminated are: mahi mahi, grouper, snapper, red snapper, barracuda, barracuda, wahoo, jack mackerel, mackerel, and ixcochines, among others. Fish do not suffer from ciguata, but other animals that consume them do.
Examples of use in Spanish: "se intoxican 20 turistas al consumir marisco con ciguata".
