- Slander; false accusation, made to cause harm. Also monetary penalty by way of compensation for this offense.
- Pecuniary penalty. In the past, the caloña was the compensation that the offender had to pay to the victim or his family as compensation for the damage caused. With the development of public criminal law, the caloña became a monetary sanction (or fine) for certain crimes.
