- Ashgabat is the capital of Turkmenistan and the main city of that country; it is also the capital of the Ashkhabad region, with 1,031,992 inhabitants (2012), located at the foot of the Kopet Mountains on the edge of the Kara desert; the Central Asian Railway and the road to Iran, Pakistan and India pass through it. It is a dry subtropical city, with shining sun, blue firmaments and fertile oases, embellished by majestic mountains; Turkmen call it "The City of Love". It was established in 1882 on the site of ancient Turkmen settlements and until Soviet times consisted of a small commercial town with no industries. Today it has large textile plants producing cotton yarn and fabric, silks and knitted goods; meat canning factories, glass, footwear; locomotive repair shops and garment, tobacco and wine-making industries. There is also a storehouse of the famous Turkmen carpets. Among the educational establishments are many advanced technical institutions and four schools of higher learning.
