What does «Treinta años» mean in Spanish?
- This dispute, which began in Germany, later spread to other European nations (1618-48). When Archduke Ferdinand, the champion of the Counter-Reformation, was crowned king of Bohemia (1617), the Catholic minority grew and the Protestants carried out the demonstration known as the Defenestration of Prague (1618). When Ferdinand II was elected emperor in 1619, the Czech revolt handed the Bohemian crown to Frederick V, elector of the Palatinate, thus beginning the first phase of the war. Subsequently, England, Denmark, Sweden and France intervened in the conflict in support of the Protestants and against the expansion of the house of Austria, and Spain and Portugal in support of Emperor Ferdinand II. The conflict ended with the signing of the Treaties of Westphalia (1648).
