What does «transliterar» mean in Spanish?
- Representing the signs of one writing system by the signs of another. Strictly speaking, transliterations are used to reflect the exact way in which a given word is represented in the original language. For example, for the Greek language the Greek alphabet is used, which has 24 letters, overlapping in some letters, but it also differs from the 27-letter version of the Latin alphabet used for writing in English. So in the etymologies in the Spanish dictionaries (like ours) the Greek words are used transliterated with Spanish letters.
