- Treatise on organic beings whose remains or vestiges are found in fossils. Paleontology studies the fossils of animals and plants to discover the ancient forms of life, origin, evolution, environment and extinction. It shares fundamentals and methods with geology and biology. A person versed in paleontology is called a paleontologist.
