What does «olivar superintensivo» mean in Spanish?
- Super-intensive olive groves (or hedgerows) are those where up to 2000 olive trees per hectare are planted, allowing to increase the production per hectare, to bring forward the entry of the harvest (from the third year) and to mechanize the harvesting of the olive trees. In traditional olive groves, the density is between 200 and 300 olive trees per hectare. This technique has a high implementation cost and requires a large amount of water. It also requires specific varieties of olive trees to be planted in hedgerows (such as Arbequina, Koroneiki or Arbosana).
