- American tortoise turtle, with a very convex, rough, dark colored carapace (shell) with yellow squares. Native to savannahs and forests in Panama, Venezuela, Colombia, Guyanas, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and northern Argentina. They are used as pets and, in some regions, are eaten, although they are in danger of extinction. Scientific name: Chelonoidis carbonaria.
