What does «molcajete» mean in Spanish?
- Large mortar made of mainly volcanic stone, baked clay or hardwood, with three short feet. It is used together with the tejolote, which is the stone mallet used to crush food. It is widely used in Mexico. It is used to grind tomatoes, garlic, onions, chili, etc. to make sauces. Grains and spices are also ground. This mortar is traditional of the Mesoamerican ethnic groups, including Mayans and Aztecs. It is similar to the South American "batán".
