What does «meritocracia» mean in Spanish?
- Rule by those who come to power on the basis of merit or talent, technical knowledge and professional skills. Meritocracy is a political system in which economic assets and/or political power are conferred on individuals on the basis of talent, effort and achievement, rather than wealth or social class. Advancement in such a system is based on performance, measured through examinations or demonstrated achievement. Although the concept of meritocracy has been around for centuries, the term itself was coined in 1958 by sociologist Michael Dunlop Young in his satirical essay "The Rise of the Meritocracy" and was originally conceived as a negative concept.
- A society or organization in which status and income are obtained on the basis of effort and competition, rather than kinship or other preferences.
